clubhouse chat: rhythm and snooze

Aug 9
3 min read

happy sunday, club. we've already established that the sunday scaries are a schedule problem — and that the long shower is secretly a bedtime story. tonight, the plot twist: the most glamorous thing you can do for your body this week is the same bedtime. seven times. science says the rhythm is the luxury — and on repeat looks good on you.

the glow file

the internet is deep in its sleepmaxxing era — mouth tape, magnesium mocktails, a tracker on every wrist. 56 percent of american adults have tried a viral sleep trend, and the sleep industry is now worth 73 billion dollars (the reporting is here). so here's the twist the girlies deserve: the biggest study on this — about 61,000 people tracked through the uk biobank — found that a regular sleep schedule predicts a long life better than how many hours you clock (the study lives here). the most consistent sleepers had a 20 to 48 percent lower risk of early death than the erratic ones. translation: your body doesn't want a gadget, it wants a rhythm. the free hack was inside you all along.

the piggy bank

in spokane, washington, the family bootmakers at jk boots watched the wildfire crews pulling double shifts and started handing over their handmade boots — more than twenty-five thousand dollars' worth since the fires started this month, laced straight onto firefighters' feet (the story is here). boots built to last a decade, given to the people running toward the smoke. that part gets us every time.

heard at the clubhouse

one hundred years ago this week — august 6, 1926 — a teenager from manhattan named gertrude 'trudy' ederle greased up, dove into the english channel, and swam into history: the first woman ever to cross it, in about fourteen and a half hours — nearly two hours faster than the men's record (the archive is here). newspapers had just printed that women weren't built for it. new york answered with a ticker-tape parade two million people deep. and this very week, a hundred years later, an all-women relay is crossing the channel in her honor, raising money for drowning-prevention lessons (meet them here). the water remembers her name.

the sunshine page

two wins for the group chat: wild tigers are officially back in kazakhstan — the first project on earth to return tigers to a country they'd vanished from, seventy years after they disappeared (the comeback is here). and on england's dorset coast, the first baby puffin in thirty years just hatched — the local colony had been down to three pairs (the roundup is here). comebacks aren't just for athletes.

the dress code

sunday's uniform finally exists: the varsity sunday short in victory grey — fifty dollars, fleece-lined, three-inch inseam, drawstring, pockets for your phone and your snacks. it's the bottom half of the sunday mock neck you already love, and there are exactly two left — consider this the club whispering 'run.' shop it here.

the passed note

the only sleepmaxxing hack that costs nothing: pick one bedtime and one wake-up time tonight, and repeat them all seven days — weekends included, within an hour. set two alarms: one to get up, one to wind down. the schedule is the supplement.

send this to a friend. that's how the club grows.

health is hot.
