clubhouse chat: pear pressure

Sep 4
3 min read

pear season officially opens this month, and the club has been waiting all summer. last week the fruit desk made the case for apples, and the response was basically a group chat full of grocery receipts. this week we are moving one shelf over, because the quietest fruit in the bowl is hiding the loudest resume.

the glow file

are pears good for you? yes, and the receipts are almost unfair: one medium pear covers about 24 percent of your daily fiber for roughly 100 calories, with 190 milligrams of potassium and a 10 percent hit of vitamin c on the side. a 2015 systematic review out of the university of minnesota combed the pear research from 1970 on and found the fruit potentially improves gut health, with early links to lower stroke risk, lower type 2 diabetes risk, and heart protection in postmenopausal women. the review's author, dr. joanne slavin, put the problem plainly: americans fall short on dietary fiber, and pears are one of the easiest ways to stop falling short. rookies, this one is yours. before the memberships and the macros and the 5am anything, a pear with the skin on is the single easiest deposit on the menu, and the fruit desk has receipts on this whole category. no minimum balance required.

the piggy bank

september is hunger action month, and texas showed up on day two. the north texas food bank, which moved 141 million meals through its 12 county service area last year, just opened a month long push where a single dollar covers three meals, a kroger backed peanut butter drive is aiming for 100,000 pounds of the good stuff, and a canned food sculpture contest at northpark center turns five dollar votes into family dinners. ceo trisha cunningham says one in four texas kids is experiencing hunger this year, which is exactly why a food bank turning peanut butter into a team sport is the kind of money story we keep on file.

heard at the clubhouse

coco gauff is treating flushing meadows like a home court. she rolled through her second round 6-3, 6-4 over zeynep sonmez, still rolling since she lifted the cincinnati trophy, and the scouting report used the phrase impeccable form, which is also what we call it when someone racks their weights. the dating desk would like the record to show that the courtship trend of the season agrees with her pacing: slow dating, the one or two connections at a time approach, is having its biggest year yet, with over 60 percent of app users reporting burnout from doing it the fast way. club ruling: pears do not ripen on the tree, and neither does anything worth keeping. one good rally at a time.

the sunshine page

three american red wolf pups born at the saint louis zoo, the only ones born in professional care anywhere this year, were just fostered into a wild wolf family in north carolina, where fewer than 40 red wolves remain. every pup matters, says the program lead, and this fall three more are learning to be wild. and in tampa, a 76 pound calf named beatrix just became the zoo's first manatee birth in over a decade, born to a rescued mom the staff named pneuma thurman, which we are still not over.

the dress code

it is friday, so the friday studio shorts finally get their own byline: the petal red colorway, sixty five dollars, built in pockets, reflective logo, and a mid to high rise that stays put from pilates through errands. small sizes only right now, xs and s, and the rack is not deep, so consider this the club's polite nudge. pair them with the beauty desk's current obsession, glass hair, the mirror shine glossing trend taking over 2026, because the whole look is beauty from within with a high gloss finish. pear juice glow optional but encouraged.

the passed note

check the neck. pears are one of the few fruits that ripen off the tree, from the inside out, so press gently near the stem: if it gives a little, it is ready, and if it is hard, give it a day or two on the counter next to a banana. patience is a rep too. per the glow file, the deposit still counts at 100 calories.

send this to a friend. that's how the club grows.

health is hot.
