clubhouse chat: give a fig

Aug 21
3 min read

figs showed up in august like they own the place, because august is their whole personality. we turned grapes into edible spf last week, so tonight the fig gets its receipts. fruit friday, let’s gossip.

the glow file

are figs good for you? yes, and mostly because your gut is where the glow actually starts. figs are a prebiotic fruit: in a study cleveland clinic breaks down, people with ibs who ate figs twice a day had less bloating, less straining, and calmer digestion, and calm digestion is the thing your skin has been quietly begging for. two fresh figs bring fiber, polyphenols, and a little calcium, so it is basically a multivitamin that tastes like dessert.

the grocery run

how do you know a fig is ready? it should feel like a ripe peach, droop a little at the neck, and maybe show one clear bead of syrup at the stem. figs do not ripen after they are picked, so skip anything hard, per the farmers’ almanac. keep them unwashed in a single layer in the fridge, eat within a day or two, and let them come back to room temp before the first bite. dorm-room approved: no cooking, no equipment, just good timing.

the piggy bank

in marin county, california, philanthropist maja kristin handed the ross valley school district one million dollars, split into surprise checks of about nine thousand dollars each for more than one hundred teachers, counselors, and aides. she did it because the district pays well under its wealthy neighbors, and back-to-school just got a lot softer for the people running the classrooms.

heard at the clubhouse

culture desk: madonna re-signed with warner and is making a new album at sixty-seven, and ms. magazine says she is still rewriting the rules for women in pop. reinvention is not a young woman’s sport, it is a practiced one. dating desk: tinder named clear-coding the mood of the year, with sixty percent of daters just wanting you to say what you actually want. say the thing. a fig does not pretend to be a grape.

the sunshine page

two wildlife comebacks on two continents. white storks are nesting in the english midlands for the first time in about six hundred years, a bird gone since the tudors, back over derbyshire. and on a california creek, a restoration project just doubled young salmon survival and grew the fish twice as fast. proof that a stream, like a person, can be coaxed back to life.

the dress code

the daily fit: the form seamless sculpt sports bra in winter rose, thirty-five dollars and the softest way into the club. add the matching shorts and you still land under a hundred: rookie starter kit, sorted.

the night out: quiet gear, loud bag. we are eyeing a burgundy bottega veneta jodie, hunted vintage, about two thousand dollars of woven leather that does all the talking so you do not have to.

what’s trending: fair isle sweaters, the heritage knit marie claire says is everywhere for fall. the lake-house-grandma pattern, worn like you mean it.

the passed note

tonight’s move: halve four figs, tear them over greek yogurt, add a drizzle of honey and a crack of black pepper. it reads dessert, it lands protein, and it takes ninety seconds. that is the whole recipe.

send this to a friend. that’s how the club grows.

health is hot.
