clubhouse chat: quince charming

Oct 17
3 min read

it is friday at the clubhouse, and the fruit on the counter is older than the roman empire. a freshman walks past it at the farmers market because it looks like an apple that lied. a thirty-something buys one because the internet said to, then stares at it for a week. a grandmother smells it from the doorway and knows exactly what october is for, because she has been poaching them since 1974. last fruit friday we gave dates a hot girl rebrand; today's guest is the one aphrodite claimed first. meet quince, the original love fruit. stay to the end, the passed note teaches it to blush.

the fruit stand

quince is the golden, fuzzy, wildly fragrant cousin of the apple and pear, born in the caucasus and in season right now, october through december. stateside, look for the pineapple quince, grown mostly in california. picking is easy because the fruit does the talking: choose one that is deep yellow, heavy for its size, and perfumed enough to smell before you see it. rock hard is normal. that is not a flaw, it is the species. do not eat it raw, it will pucker you into next week. leave one in a bowl and it perfumes the whole room for two weeks, or stash it in the fridge, where it keeps for up to three months. patience is the entire point of this fruit, which is why it fits the club.

the glow file

so what is quince actually good for? a 2024 review in the journal antioxidants rounded up the research on cydonia oblonga and found a fruit stacked with polyphenols, with early evidence pointing at anti-inflammatory effects and friendlier blood sugar and blood lipid numbers. and the part your gut already suspected: in a randomized trial of children with reflux, quince syrup went head to head with ranitidine, a standard reflux drug, and held its own on symptom scores. honesty beat: the trials are small, mostly syrup, and mostly not grown women, so hold the decimals loosely. but a fruit still earning starts after two thousand years on the roster deserves the respect.

the piggy bank

in spruce pine, north carolina, lisa wilson's 23 year marriage ended this year, and the only rentals she could find after hurricane helene's damage would not take eddie, her dog of eleven years. she surrendered him to mitchell county animal rescue so he would be safe, and the shelter's director, katie elkins, decided that was not an acceptable ending. she pulled in a grant from best friends animal society, shared lisa's story, and strangers stacked up roughly eighteen thousand dollars in housing and moving help where none had existed. in september lisa got keys to a new place and drove straight back for her boy. as the rescue put it: a new house isn't home without eddie.

heard at the clubhouse

michael j. fox just got promoted to companion of the order of canada, the country's highest civilian honor, for a parkinson's advocacy run that has pushed more than three billion dollars into research through his foundation. the man has been publicly, cheerfully stubborn about hope for decades, and somewhere between back to the future and now he became the kind of famous that actually moves science. the club salutes.

the sunshine page

win one: conservationists just finished the biggest count ever taken on aldabra atoll in the seychelles and found about 180,000 giant tortoises, the largest number ever recorded for a species that was once nearly wiped out. win two: six flags magic mountain switched on california's largest solar carport, 12.37 megawatts across 637,000 square feet, shading more than 4,000 parking spaces while it powers the park. now dress for the golden hour.

the dress code

this week's pick is the friday studio leggings in daisy yellow, ninety dollars, the exact shade of a quince doing its best work on the counter. buttery, high rise, built for the friday studio session and the farmers market after. and if you want the after picture instead, the friday studio bra in petal red, forty dollars, is the color quince turns when you cook it slow. wear the transformation.

the passed note

the blush rule: peel, quarter, and simmer quince with water, a spoonful of honey, and a strip of lemon peel for about forty minutes, low and lazy. you will know it is ready because it blushes rose pink, no timer required. spoon it over yogurt all week and feel like a renaissance painting. the same low and slow patience that saved your cranberries works here. cook slow, blush often. quince charming, found.

send this to a friend. that's how the club grows.

health is hot.
