clubhouse chat: cran do

the fruit bowl has a new it girl and she is tart. the freshman knows the cranberry as dining hall juice, the thirty-something knows her as the thing you order with soda water when you are being mysterious, and grandma has been stringing her on thread and simmering her into sauce since before any of us could spell antioxidant. she is finally, properly in season. the persimmon got her crown last friday; october belongs to the tart little sister. read to the end: the passed note has a two-second trick for spotting a good cranberry, and yes, it involves bouncing.

the glow file

do cranberries actually prevent utis? the club pulled the receipts and they are good gossip. a cochrane review, the strictest fact-checker in science, read 50 trials covering 8,857 people and ruled that cranberry products meaningfully cut the risk of symptomatic utis: roughly a quarter fewer in women with recurring ones, nearly half in children. the mechanism deserves its own fan club: cranberry proanthocyanidins make the bladder wall non-stick, so e. coli simply cannot hold on. the freshman hears it as the berry that teaches bacteria to let go. the women in the thick of it hear fewer rounds of antibiotics. and the club's longest-standing members have been serving this berry since the sixties without needing a single footnote. fine print, because we read it: this is prevention, not treatment, and the evidence is weakest for pregnant women and the very elderly. an actual uti is a doctor's job; the berry is the bouncer, not the medic. speaking of people who never stop showing up.

the piggy bank

marin county, california looks rich on a postcard, but its ross valley schools sit in the bottom four percent of state funding and pay the lowest teacher salaries in the county. a local resident named maja kristin read that math, called it an injustice, and fixed a piece of it herself: one million dollars in surprise bonus checks for one hundred public school teachers, a little over nine thousand dollars each. the first-year teachers caught up on rent, the mid-career crowd finally said yes to the field trip fund, and the veterans got the thank-you three decades of mondays had earned them. 'there are things i can say yes to,' said teacher anna schnell. the other payout on the club's desk came in pink.

heard at the clubhouse

olivia rodrigo turned the drive-thru pink this week: a baja blast collab with taco bell named for a lyric, with orders feeding a donation to the taco bell foundation for girls inc., the nonprofit running mentorship and leadership programs that prepare girls to take over the room. the freshman lines up for the color, the millennial for the reference, and somebody's grandmother is quietly delighted that the biggest pop star of the moment picked girls' futures as her flavor. make it pink, make it count.

the sunshine page

full circle, cranberry edition: on cape cod, the barnstable clean water coalition is retiring old cranberry bogs and letting 64 acres go back to being wild wetlands, rebuilt like a mini everglades with settling ponds, cattails and peat doing the filtering, to pull thousands of kilograms of nitrogen out of the water headed for the bays. in the director's words, hardly anything is as successful at removing contaminants as a wetland. the berry fed a hundred harvests; now the bog retires into a water filter, and the eelgrass and the shellfish get the next comeback. dress for the harvest.

the dress code

cranberry is a color the way it is a personality, and the closest thing in the club closet is the friday studio bra in petal red, forty dollars, a red with the season's exact tartness-to-warmth ratio. wear the berry, eat the berry, be the berry.

the passed note

the bounce test: a fresh cranberry bounces. growers actually sort them by bouncing them over wooden barriers, and the dull thud of a dud gets rejected. so trust the bounce at the market, keep a bag in the freezer, and throw a handful into oatmeal, or bundle them into something you already love if straight tart is too much honesty for a friday. cranberry says: stay tart, stay un-clingy.

send this to a friend. that's how the club grows.

health is hot.

the proverb survived peer review, a record gift funded brains, and strawberries are getting steam cleaned. friday, solved.
