clubhouse chat: squeeze the day

3 min read

saturday at the studio has its own sound: the freshman sprinting for the corner spot by the mirror, the nine o'clock crew that booked as a group chat and arrived as a committee, the grandmother who has been quietly squeezing something since before it had a hashtag. glute block 2.0 wraps week one this weekend, and the rules have not changed: two sessions, a little more weight each week, retest in week four (the full blueprint lives here). today's issue is about the one upgrade that weighs nothing and ships free: the thought you bring to the rep. the passed note version takes five seconds and zero equipment.

the glow file

is the mind-muscle connection real? lifters have sworn by it for decades, and in 2018 a lab finally checked. researchers ran 30 new lifters through the same eight-week program with one difference: half were cued to focus on squeezing the muscle, half on just moving the weight. the squeeze group's arms grew 12.4 percent. the movement group's grew 6.9 (Schoenfeld et al., European Journal of Sport Science 2018). same exercises, same sets, nearly double the growth, from a thought. the honest fine print: quads grew about the same either way, and on a heavy single, thinking about driving the floor away still beats thinking about the muscle. then there is the study the club will be quoting all week: a trial had people do nothing but seated glute squeezes, fifteen minutes a day for eight weeks, and they matched a real bridging group for hip strength and were the only group to add measurable size (Lehecka et al., PeerJ 2019). translation: the muscle listens when you talk to it. on block days, talk to it.

the piggy bank

michael jordan just made the best assist of his career, and it went to his mom. he gave ten million dollars to the unc school of social work, the largest single gift in its history, and the school is renaming its global innovations center for deloris p. jordan, who has shown up for that program for nearly forty years (WUNC). the money funds scholarships for social work students and the jordan institute for families, which the jordans founded in the nineties. greatness, it turns out, runs in the family in both directions.

heard at the clubhouse

the internet crowned its favorite celebrity of the season and he has never thrown a punch. backpack, son of former champion holly and named for riding his mother's back across the river as a cub, won fat bear week with more than one hundred thousand votes (Global News). his official profile credits quiet strength: he does not fight the other bears, he just out-eats them, up to thirty fish a day. a mama's boy who wins by minding his own business and finishing his plate. the club gets it.

the sunshine page

win one: new zealand's wētāpunga, the world's heaviest insect at roughly the weight of a mouse, just moved from nationally endangered to nationally increasing after conservationists released more than eleven thousand of them across ten predator-free islands. win two: an experimental mix of gene therapy and light-pulsing goggles gave six of ten patients with advanced retinitis pigmentosa a clinically meaningful boost in light sensitivity, enough for some to find a doorway or follow a line (Positive News, week 41). now dress for the session.

the dress code

the motion shorts, sixty-five dollars, are the block's uniform bottom half: built to sit through a five second pause squat without renegotiating, light enough for the coffee walk after. the motion line has been earning its name all month; the shorts are the piece that makes saturday's session feel like recess.

the passed note

the five second squeeze. between sets today, or at your desk on monday, squeeze your glutes as hard as you politely can for five seconds, relax, repeat ten times. that tiny habit held its own against a real exercise in the trial above, and it is the cheapest way to rehearse the mind-muscle connection before you add weight next week. add the squeeze before you add the weight. that is the whole trick. squeeze the day.

send this to a friend. that's how the club grows.

health is hot.
