clubhouse chat: peer pressure

saturday at the studio has a guest policy: bring someone. the freshman is there because her roommate signed them both up and now it is a standing date. the thirty-something has a 9am crew that started as coworkers and arrives as a committee. the grandmother has walked with the same two neighbors since 1974 and calls them her cabinet. week two of glute block 2.0 wraps this weekend, and the club already filed proof that the people are the point in life of the party. today's science goes one better: the right company does not just make the workout nicer, it makes you measurably stronger. the passed note runs the draft.

the glow file

do group workouts actually work better? michigan state researchers put 58 women on stationary bikes and told them to ride as long as felt comfortable. alone, they averaged about 11 minutes. riding beside a partner they believed was a little better than them, nearly 20. told the team's score depended on whoever stopped first, 22 minutes, double the solo number. the receipts live here. psychologists call it the köhler effect: nobody wants to be the reason the group stops, so nobody is. the partner in the study was a prerecorded video, by the way. your gym buddy does not even have to be real to work, although the club recommends one who can spot you.

the class version holds up too. a 12 week trial followed medical students, professionally stressed humans, through group fitness classes: perceived stress dropped 26.2 percent, and physical, mental and emotional quality of life climbed 24.8, 12.6 and 26 percent. the students who trained alone or with one partner logged more minutes per session and got an 11 percent mental bump, with no change in stress at all. honesty beat: small studies, lab bikes and med students, so hold the decimals loosely. the direction is still loud: company is a dose, and the studio pours it.

the piggy bank

selena gomez hosted her fourth annual rare impact fund benefit at the hollywood palladium on wednesday night and raised nearly three million dollars for youth mental health, pushing the fund past thirty million dollars total on its way to a one hundred million dollar goal. leon bridges sang, half of hollywood showed up in formalwear, and the whole evening ran on today's thesis: minds, like muscles, grow better with backup.

heard at the clubhouse

winnie the pooh turned one hundred this week. a.a. milne's first pooh book landed october 14, 1926, and to celebrate, the publisher is donating the classics plus a brand new authorized sequel to 150 of britain's red phone boxes turned tiny libraries. actor sally phillips, narrator of the reissued audiobooks, opened the campaign by reading to schoolchildren at a phone box library in kent, and says pooh has always been the number one bear in her house. one hundred years of a bear whose whole philosophy is showing up for your friends. the club's founding document, basically.

the sunshine page

win one: catalonia's biggest human tower competition packed the tarragona arena with 42 teams, and castellers de vilafranca built a nine by nine with folre, nine people wide and nine stories tall, the first ever completed at the contest, on the way to a record 14th title. hundreds of hands under one tower: the köhler effect in a sash. win two: scientists confirmed 57 new deep sea species from argentina's mar del plata canyon, including a sea cucumber nicknamed loki, after reviewing an expedition that four million people watched live. even the deep sea runs group projects. now dress for the one on your schedule.

the dress code

the studio set completes itself: the friday studio shorts in petal red, sixty-five dollars, the missing piece between friday's daisy yellow leggings and the petal red bra. eight pairs on the shelf as of this morning, cut in the same buttery fabric as the rest of the line, and short enough to prove you did not skip week two. teams look better in uniform. science did not test that part, but the club has eyes.

the passed note

the draft pick. the köhler sweet spot is a partner a notch better than you: close enough to keep pace with, good enough to chase. so run your draft tonight. text one person who is slightly ahead of you, name a day, and book the session, because week three opens monday and adds weight again. a workout with a witness is twice as hard to cancel, and a heavier bar goes up easier with company. if the group chat leaves you on read, pep talk already taught you to coach yourself by name. good peer pressure: the only kind the club pours.

send this to a friend. that's how the club grows.

health is hot.
