clubhouse chat: makeup sleep

Oct 11
3 min read

sunday at the clubhouse has a dress code of its own: the blanket. the freshman is asleep until brunch, the nine o'clock girls are on their second coffee and first gossip, and somewhere a grandmother is ironing monday's blouse tonight because she learned decades ago that a good week is built the evening before. last sunday the club handed you a green flag and sent you outside. this week the prescription flips: stay in bed a little longer. cardiology approves. and tonight's passed note needs one alarm and thirty seconds.

the week ahead

glute block 2.0 opens week two tomorrow morning, and the homework from the block blueprint has one new word in it: heavier. same two sessions, same lifts, a little more weight on each one than last week. pick your session days now (the club votes monday and thursday), fill the bottle, lay the kit out tonight, and keep saturday's five second squeeze working between sets. week one built the habit. week two starts building the muscle. the rest of this page explains why your other job today is staying horizontal.

the glow file

can you catch up on sleep? the club took the question straight to cardiology. researchers followed 90,903 adults in the uk biobank for nearly fourteen years and sorted them by how much extra sleep they banked on weekends. the biggest weekend catch-up sleepers were 19 percent less likely to develop heart disease than the smallest, and among people running on less than seven hours a night, the catch-up crowd cut their risk by 20 percent. the honesty beat: it is one observational study, not a hall pass for all-nighters, and a steady schedule still beats a heroic saturday rescue. but if the week shorted you, the lie in is not lazy. it is maintenance. consider the snooze button medically endorsed, once.

the piggy bank

carey mulligan and marcus mumford hosted their annual wassail dinner and walked away with a record seven point six five million dollars for children in conflict, the organization they helped build to reach kids in war zones. one dinner party, one record, and a decade of quietly showing up behind it. date night with a mission statement. the club approves.

heard at the clubhouse

michael j. fox walked into rideau hall and left with a promotion: companion of the order of canada, the highest level of the country's highest honor. his foundation has pushed more than three billion dollars into parkinson's research, and he spent the week calling the canada and america relationship doomed to success. optimism with receipts. the club's favorite kind.

the sunshine page

win one: columbus, ohio became the first city in america to stock free period products in the restrooms of every major sports venue it owns, 165 dispensers strong. win two: twiggy the giraffe, rescued in kenya as a week-old orphan, strolled back into her old sanctuary at age five just to say hello, then went back to her wild life in tsavo. showing up for your old club: timeless. now dress for the week you are about to run.

the dress code

the form high rise seamless leggings in winter rose, eighty dollars, are week two's uniform. seamless sculpt that moves with the squat, a high rise that stays put when the weight goes up, and a dusty rose that reads october without trying. lay them out tonight next to your kit and monday loses its last excuse.

the passed note

the bedtime alarm. tonight, set one alarm for thirty minutes before bed instead of only one for the morning. when it rings, write monday's three non-negotiables on paper, plug the phone in across the room, and get under the covers like it is your job. the club already showed you what a game plan does for your sleep. tomorrow starts tonight. and if you oversleep a little, call it what it is: makeup sleep.

send this to a friend. that's how the club grows.

health is hot.
