clubhouse chat: mind games

Aug 17
3 min read

monday showed up and the club decided to root for her. we already told you monday is a cheat code, and today the lab coats are handing over the receipts: your brain has been keeping score this whole time.

the glow file

the study we're passing around like a note in class: back in 2007, alia crum and ellen langer found 84 hotel housekeepers who were cleaning rooms all day and still told researchers they didn't really exercise. half of them got one piece of news: your job already counts as a workout. four weeks later, the informed group had dropped an average of two pounds, lowered their blood pressure by nearly ten percent, and improved their body fat and waist-to-hip ratio (the study lives here). nothing about their day changed except the story they told themselves about it (sciencedaily has the receipts). mindset monday translation: the walk to the train, the grocery carry, the stairs you take on autopilot. it all counts the second you start counting it.

the piggy bank

jerry fort, a tiktoker with interstitial lung disease, posted from his hospital bed about the lung transplant standing between him and everything he still wants to do. eight million people watched in two days, and the tip jar sailed past seventy thousand dollars against a fifteen thousand dollar goal (the story is here). his promise to the internet: 'we make it out on the other side of this thing, i will be streaming whenever that drops.' eight million strangers said bet. that part gets us every time.

heard at the clubhouse

first, the sports pages: caitlin clark just passed sue bird on the career double-doubles list. number 29 came with 22 points and 10 assists against new york, and here is the stat to bring to brunch: bird needed 580 games, clark did it in 82 (the box score is here). game day fit: fever red lip, gold hoops, the claw clip of destiny. and from the dating desk: tinder has declared 2026 the year of yearning, even teaming up with netflix's bridgerton to teach everyone to want slowly again (refinery29 explains). psychologists call the pining renaissance a backlash to swipe-and-drop dating, and a single post about yearning just pulled 3.5 million views (psychology today has thoughts). the club's ruling: a slow burn is just anticipation training. very mindset monday of them.

the sunshine page

two wins for the group chat: a farm in scotland let a million sunflowers bloom to beat the heat, and the photos look like a screensaver from heaven (look here). and in california, a restored creek is growing young salmon twice as fast and doubling their survival rate (the comeback is here). fix the environment and the glow-up runs itself. noted.

the dress code

the daily fit: main character monday, quietly. the varsity cropped crewneck in stadium wash grey, eighty dollars, never featured before and only three left, over the base club skirt in sage, sixty-five dollars, also three left. grey plus sage is the color theory of calm confidence. the night out: quiet gear, loud bag. the crewneck comes off, the satin slip goes on, and the hermès kelly does the talking (the blueprint is here). what's trending: suede is fall's first yes, per whowhatwear's editors, so let the bag or the boot be suede and the rest stay club-issue (the list is here).

the passed note

tonight, two lines in your notes app: one thing you already did today that counts as movement, because the housekeepers proved counting works. and one monday breakfast worth waking up for: a peach cut cold, toast with too much butter, coffee in the good cup. the yearning girlies are right, wanting is half the fun. anticipation is free dopamine, spend it on breakfast.

send this to a friend. that's how the club grows.

health is hot.
