clubhouse chat: grand opening
the doors are open. carry club starts today, and every generation of the club has been training for it without calling it training: the freshman hauling a laundry bag, a lamp and a gallon of water up three flights on move-in day, the mom who treats twelve grocery bags as one trip or a personal failure, the grandmother who lifts her own suitcase into the overhead bin because letting go of that means letting go of far more than luggage. we spent september building the case for the farmer's carry. october is where we find out what the homework bought. your initiation is waiting in the passed note, and yes, you will have to write your number down. the science on why is first.
the glow file
does tracking your fitness progress actually work? yes, and the receipts are almost embarrassing. a meta analysis in psychological bulletin pooled 138 experiments and 19,951 people and found that simply monitoring your progress makes you significantly more likely to reach a goal, and the effect grows when you physically record it or report it to someone else. the college crowd does this on instinct, screenshotting the run for the group chat before the sweat dries. by the middle years the tracking goes quieter, a note in a phone, a number taped inside a locker, proof the week did not disappear into everyone else's needs. and for the members with the most birthdays, a written number is the difference between i feel weaker and i am two seconds off my best and i know exactly how to get it back. club rule from today: if you test it, you write it down. an unmeasured goal is just a rumor. one campus took the science further and attached a paycheck.
the piggy bank
researchers paid college students about five dollars a night to sleep at least seven hours, and their grades rose within a single semester. five dollars. the cheapest tuition assistance in america turned out to be bedtime. and notice the trick inside the trick: to earn the money, the students had to track the sleep. the undergrads got about a hundred bucks and better report cards, their parents heard get paid for the thing your body was begging you to do and felt seen, and the oldest members just nodded, because they have known for decades that rest is not the reward for the work. rest is the work. the week's flashier payday belongs to a point guard.
heard at the clubhouse
today is release day for the nike caitlin 1, caitlin clark's first signature shoe, one hundred forty dollars, in unisex sizing. the students will treat this morning like a raffle they intend to win. the millennials are doing the math out loud: sheryl swoopes got the first women's signature shoe in 1995, and the list stayed insultingly short for thirty years. and the members who loved women's basketball before it was a business plan get the deepest beat: a woman's name on a shoe is a woman's name in the record, and the record is finally moving at her speed. everyone wants to stand in her shoes. as of this morning, technically, everyone can.
the sunshine page
two comebacks this week, both caught on trail cameras. in northwest australia a nabarlek, a wallaby small enough to sit in your two hands, was photographed on mainland dambeemangaddee country for the first time in fifty years. and on isle royale in lake superior, a 70 year old hiker missing for eleven days was found alive after a trail camera caught him mid stride. fifty years or eleven days, the lesson holds at every scale: keep showing up and let the record find you.
the dress code
opening day calls for a support system. the base sports bra in mocha, forty dollars, is october in a colorway: locked in for the heavy carries, soft enough for the coffee after. the freshman wears it under the rec center tank, the mom wears it because it survives the workout and the workday, and the lifetime members already know mocha goes with everything gold.
the passed note
carry club initiation, three steps, no dues. one: retest your dead hang and write the seconds next to september's number. two: pick up the heaviest pair of anything you can walk twenty steps with, farmer style, one in each hand, and write that down too. three: last thursday of october, test both again. the glow file already told you why the writing is the workout. steady grip, heavy things, receipts.
send this to a friend. that's how the club grows.
health is hot.
