clubhouse chat: motion carried

day two of the back to school, back to work edit, and today the club votes on motion. the freshman sprints the quad because she left at 8:57 for a 9:00. the thirty-something found out her commute has a secret identity as a workout. the grandmother never needed the word cardio, she has errands. yesterday we dressed the everyday; today is the stuff built to move, plus the science that says your ordinary tuesday has been training you all along. the passed note makes it official.

the glow file

does everyday movement actually count? it counts embarrassingly much. mayo clinic researcher james levine spent years measuring what he named NEAT, non-exercise activity thermogenesis, every calorie you burn doing dishes, taking stairs and fidgeting through meetings. the numbers read like gossip: a slow stroll burns roughly double what sitting does, and two people the same size can differ by up to two thousand calories a day on NEAT alone. an earlier levine study strapped sensors to office workers and found the leaner ones were simply up and moving about two hours more per day, no gym required. your day is a dose, and you set it. back to work season translation: the stairs are a free elective. take them. speaking of 26.2 miles of motion money.

the piggy bank

this sunday, 55,000 people run the bank of america chicago marathon, and about a third of the field runs for official charities. last year's race set a record, forty-seven point one million dollars raised, and since 2002 the charity program has moved more than four hundred five million dollars, every cent of it generated by people deciding to keep going. two of the names on sunday's start list used to win world series for a living.

heard at the clubhouse

anthony rizzo and jake arrieta are running chicago this weekend, trading the 2016 cubs' championship diamond for 26.2 miles of lakefront wind. rizzo is pacing his family foundation toward a one hundred thousand dollar goal for families facing childhood cancer, and arrieta is on marathon number two, promising his process will be adjusted this time. it will not be adjusted enough, jake. nobody's ever is. the sunshine page kept moving too.

the sunshine page

win one: colorado counted six wolf packs and a spring baby boom, a major milestone for the gray wolf reintroduction program. the whole state is literally moving again. win two: joshua tree is surveying for two new wildlife crossings for mountain lions, planned after the loss of an eighteen-month-old male. motion, carried, for everyone on the map. now vote with your legs, and dress for it.

the dress code

the motion half of the edit answers to the form high rise seamless leggings in velvet plum, eighty dollars, high rise so nothing slips at the bottom of a rep, seamless so nothing digs in by hour nine, squat-proof where it matters most. backup singers: the friday studio leggings in petal red and the form sculpt shorts in chestnut noir. clothes that commute, then train. the motion passes.

the passed note

NEAT-ify one workday: take every stair you meet, walk the long way to the far bathroom, stand for your calls, and let the commute double as a warm-up, because tonight is glute block 2.0, session one, the four moves from the block map, with saturday's backpack load. easy, accessible, already on your calendar. all in favor, say nothing and just show up. motion carried.

send this to a friend. that's how the club grows.

health is hot.
